for enquiries about charters, estate papers, sasines, tacks or pre-1700 manuscripts. please attach a clean scan if possible and note any restoration history.

what i look at

  • Highland charters (pre-1700)
  • Estate papers (1580-1745)
  • Sasines — original or abbreviated
  • Tacks and renewals
  • Pre-1700 manuscripts and letters
  • Marginalia review
  • Restoration review (before / after)
  • Forgery checks on private-market documents

how a typical case starts

  1. 01

a short email with a clean scan, if possible. it helps to also send a phone photo at an angle, so any folds and ink layering are visible.

  2. 02

a reply within a few days with a written quote, scope and rough timeline. estate paper bundles and pre-1700 charters usually need two to four reading sessions.

  3. 03

the original document, posted or hand-delivered to the edinburgh office. nothing is photographed for the catalog without prior written consent.

  4. 04

a short written report. notes on ink, margins, layout and changes are kept separate from any narrative the client attaches to the document.
